The rivalry between the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics didn’t skip a beat, even without the presence of Kobe Bryant. The two teams played an intense, exciting game that concluded with the Celtics taking the victory, 87-86.
The Lakers performance was impressive considering they didn’t have Kobe. To be fair, the Celtics were mourning the loss of Eddie House.
The Lakers played their first close game without Kobe, and their lack of a go-to-guy was evident down the stretch. Down by one with a minute to go, Shannon Brown missed a jumper from the wing and you got the “uh oh” sense from the crowd.
They realized that the Lakers were going to have to rely on someone other than Kobe to win the game for them. With 30 seconds left it was Gasol, who attempted to pass to Brown under the basket and turned the ball over. Lamar Odom then went coast-to-coast for a layup with 2.2 seconds left and it rimmed out.
Luckily the Lakers had already called timeout. I didn’t envy Phil Jackson having to draw up the final play, and it turned out to be Fisher putting up an off-balance leaner that didn’t draw iron. We all knew it was going to happen, but the Lakers finally missed Kobe Bryant.
